Original Sixteen to One Mine - Alleghany, CA

These photos were from a 5 hour tour that I took in April, 2002 of the Sixteen to One Mine. The Sixteen to One is very unique several ways. 1) Started in 1896, it is still operating
    2) It's mining methods, although supplemented with modern metal detectors, haven't changed much in the last 50 years
    3) It is a pocket mine - meaning that rather than its Gold being deposited in predictable layers, it is deposited in erratic pockets.
    4) It's gold ore is primarily crystallized gold (alloyed with some Cu & Ag).
All of these factors make for a fascinating tour (look for photos of adits through white quartz!). This mine produces some incredible specimens (origsix.com - select gold sales, and then "Best of the Best&quot.
Hopefully some of these photos will shed light on how the abandoned mine features may have been used in their day.
If any of you can take this tour, I would highly recommend it!
    Enjoy
