Episode 6: Searching for Susan

Missing since early December of 2009, little is know about the location of 28 year old Susan Powell. In the last few months some clues and rumors have surfaced that her body may have been hidden in a mine shaft somewhere in the west desert region of Utah. Last week Mojave Underground teamed up with Gold Rush Expeditions, Family Search and Rescue, Linda Osborne, and several other volunteers to search target mine shafts in the Dugway mountains.

We plan on searching several more mines as we gather the necessary equipment.

Crazy stuff. I really enjoyed the video, and am curious about the smoldering mine. Hopefully it can be searched again, and soon. Nice work, thank you for taking the initiative on such a noble cause! Hats off to the other organizations involved as well.

Could you tell if the timbers are still smoldering at all? If so, getting some ventilation fans out there could possibly provide enough fresh air to reignite the timbers deep down...

I keep telling myself I should drive out to a timber-lined vertical shaft just south of Mercur Canyon to see if the grating has been tampered with in any way. By calculating the time it takes for a falling object to hit the bottom, it's about 650 feet deep. The access to that shaft isn't heavily traveled, so not too many folks drive over to it.
I'd say I'm fat and out of shape, but, "round" is a shape...

I'm sure its all burned out by now, it will just take another week or so to circulate enough to check out again. May be interesting to see exactly what was burned and is now in ashes at the bottom. I don't think it has anything to do with the case at all, but it would be interesting to get to the bottom anyway.

Definitely check out any shafts in your travels that you think could have been accessible via 2WD in 6" of snow. I think any with cut rebar grates are worth investigating. We have one in mind now that we are just waiting to get the gear in line to check out.

                It's not her...

A sheepherder discovered the body of a woman just outside of Laramie, Wyo. The body was of special interest to investigators in Utah as the description fit many of the characteristics of Susan Powell. Tuesday afternoon police told KSL the body was not that of Susan Powell.

Sgt. Mike Powell with the West Valley City Police Department confirmed Tuesday afternoon that the body found is not that of Susan Powell, though he did not reveal how police came to that conclusion.

Bummer, was hoping her family could finally know one way or the other and have some closure.
