    Camping tonight

Just throwing out a last minute camping announcement for any spur of the moment person that doesn't already have plans tonight. I will be camping in the Eureka area tonight. I hope to do a little exploring tonight and tomorrow. If anyone is up for it call/text me 801.913.2464 or 146.760 or channel 22.

Tomorrow I will be participating in the BSA ontargetunpc.com ham/mirror signaling activity on Bismark Peak during the morning and afternoon, then hopefully some more exploring around the area. Lots of mines in the East Tintic Mining District.

Too bad I couldn't go with you, a little last minute and I was already on my way to Gold Hill when I pulled this post up.

Got a trip report for us?

Been w/o a laptop power cord until now so I have had limited internet access lately. Thanks for the reply though Stu! Since I ran out of time, energy, and by myself, I didn't end up getting to explore any of the many mines in the area. Killed me to pass them all up w/o checking them out!

I didn't mind moving dead trees off the road and getting new pin stripping on the Cruiser, but when the 3-5 foot tall bushes moved from the sides to the middle of the "road", I decided to take another look at my mapping software. Surprisingly the road really did stop where it said it would. Okay, so maybe I went a bit farther...

It was Pitch Black and midnight when I ended up parking here at about 6200 ft elevation leaving me left to hike the rest of the 8000+ peak. Thought it would be cake. I slept on my roof rack and found it impossible to get a level parking spot. Not sure if it was that, or every little sound that kept me from getting more than an hour of sleep that night.

Not a great representing how steep it was, but this is what I woke up to. No trails, not even a cow path!

If you look closely you can see my white speck in the only brush area around.

The 2x2 ft mirror and the kids with me on the left minus the 2 leaders. We were able to make 14 contacts via mirror signals (and of course the ham radio using simplex frequencies) some as far as 40 and 50 miles away. Truly a neat experience!

If you open gates, make sure to close them behind you.

Wow that looks like one heck of a hike. The mirror signaling is really cool and 14 contacts is very good. Were all the teams posted on mountain peaks?

Let's just say I went through all 75 ounces from my camelbak and all my gatorades a little quicker than expected. My troop from Orem I was assigned to help out went up the other side and made it to the peak early while I was about an hour late. I felt pretty bad. I am sure we could have made more contacts but the other peaks started taking off. There were 108 BSA troops on peaks all over utah. Some peaks ended up having multiple groups. Each group had a ham radio volunteer to get in touch and verify mirror contacts peak to peak. I guess there were a few groups on the valley floor too.

P.S. Stu, I will be following you on twitter in a bit. You may need to pay attention if you care to know who it is however.
