How can one buy a mine, land with a mine, a ghost town, or just property in a ghost town?

Unless it is already a patented claim or private property you can't "buy" a mine anymore. Same goes with land in a ghost town or the ghost town itself. All that one can do these days is lease the mineral rights.-Derek

The USFS UT has published this information on staking a mining claim in Utah... Not exactly the same as "buying" a mine, but not as severe or costly as leasing mineral rights either. A claim can be a good way to tie up land sufficient to disallow DOGM from backfilling all the shafts in UTAH.

You guys are amazing! Thank you for the info. I am going to go through that PDF. I wonder if Mojave can start up a collection for "staking a mine claim" on something near bye that is worth saving and possible to save...
Maybe you could call it, I don't know, Mojave Underground Mine?
K, I will shut up and just read through this stuff before I post here again.Tobin - K7TOB

So I probably don't understand everything I am reading here but it doesn't seem like it's that big of a deal. I guess I am asking you guys why it is a big deal to "stake a claim"? I have to imagine it is otherwise that would be a good reason for Mojave to start up a donation collection.
$190/year and have a lode mining claim.Tobin - K7TOB

Funny how Crystal and I headed up to the BLM office today. Unfortunately, we found out half way there that they close at 4:30. So we went and splurged at IKEA instead.Comment

A very rough cut of a lecture by the late Stephen Ryland (CalGold, History of Mining, Professional Geologist) in 1984 on staking a mining claim. We invite annotations and comments in order to UPDATE this video for 2009!

I have 6 smaller mines claimed here in western AZ. They are all on a 640 acre parcel. Utah has a bit different rules on claiming there than AZ does so i cant really help you there unless you plan to hold claims here in AZ.
Either way, claiming is not that difficult of a procedure and it does, SOMEWHAT, keep BLM from destroying the mines out there.
