Schuduled Maintainance for MU Forums / Gallery 10-8-09

    Hey everyone,
I'm going to be performing a major change to the MU Gallery tomorrow evening. These gallery changes will be causing some images and links on the forum to cease to function for a few hours. While the forums and the gallery will still be operational during these changes, any posts made during the scheduled time period will not be saved.

Maintenance will occur Thursday the 8th from 8pm to 12am.

If there are any errors after the update, please feel free to send me a PM with the URL of the page with issues, and a detailed message regarding the error.

    Thanks!

Updates are finally finished! Took much longer than expected. Feel free to visit the new Gallery and let me know what you think.

The new gallery layout is location based, starting with state, and diverting into either individual mines or mining districts.

Also if anyone would like to contribute photos to the gallery we can help arrange that. As you can see we have many Utah photos, 4000+, and very few from the other states.

With so many mine sites disappearing every year it becomes even more important to photograph and archive them while we still can.

Thanks for your patience during the update!

Mike, good work on the upgrade. I know first hand how much work it is to maintain sites like this. I appreciate the effort.

I have a lot of photos from Nevada that I would be interested in adding to the archive. Does the gallery software automatically resize or is that something that I need to do before upload? (Of course I resize all of the photos I include in my posts, but I'm not sure about the gallery.) Do you have a preferred size in pixels?

Stewart, I'm with you about documenting history before it's gone forever! One of the greatest history lessons I ever got was reading through my uncle's set of encyclopedias from the late 1930's and then through the annual yearbooks. Reading about world war II was completely different because it was a current event and they didn't know who was going to win. The writers were looking forward and not knowing what the future held. Everything we read now about WWII is looking backwards at a known outcome. History is funny that way.

I'll be in Carson City, NV for the next week. (Wish I could get down in some of THOSE mines!!). Let me know how to upload the photos and I'll start populating the Nevada section.

Oh yeah, you might want to check the "tags" in the Nevada section. It looks like you copied Colorado and didn't change the Colorado tag to Nevada.

          Joanne,

There is no need to resize photos for the gallery, they are automatically resized and can be viewed in different sizes once they are added. Your native camera resolution saved as a .jpg will do just fine. I will send you a PM with the instructions to upload to the server. I look forward to seeing all of your pictures. They will be a great addition to the gallery, thank you!

My grandfather had a similar encyclopedia set that was focused entirely on the war. I wonder what people will learn historically from the present period, what will the chapter heading be? Makes you wonder..

Take lots of pictures in Carson City! Your trip reports have been fantastic. I am still working on getting all the tags submitted, right now they are basically just a rough copy and paste job. Keep an eye out for updated tags and descriptions.

I glanced through the photo gallery this morning and I like the organization that was set in place there. Good job! Now I need to get with you on uploading some of my photos...

Unfortunately this is a work trip so I won't have time to wander around and take pictures. In the 20+ years I've traveled up there I've never even had the time to visit Virginia City. I hope to correct that at some point. I need to take some vacation time and drive up there. Does anyone know if there are any mine tours there?
