Hi from a long time mine explorer

Hi, I have a great interest in mine exploration for mineral specimens. I have collected in the Hidden Treasure years ago for smithsonite, aurichalcite, hemimorphite, cerussite, rosasite, mimetite, etc and also extensively at the now closed Gold Hill Mine (this needs to be re-opened!!). I also collect in many mines in the Moab area for uranium/vanadium minerals. I collect large specimens, fluorescent and micro minerals an have a large collection of thousands of specimens including close to a thousand species of minerals. I was surprised to find this organization and think it is great you guys exist, I would love to come out to meet you and visit the Ophir Mine with you.

Hi Chuck! Thanks for signing up! The Hidden Treasure is loaded with great specimens. We just finished a couple of rock hounding trips in there. Like crystal said, keep posted on our Meetup for future Hidden Treasure trips.

Last time I was up at Gold Hill, the main level and the 150' level were opened up; likely by other rock hounds. Amazing malachite specimens in there. Best I've ever seen.

I'd love to see your collection. Sounds like it is pretty vast.

      Thanks again for signing up.

          Why I collect

I collect because it is fun. I have a state government job during the day that keeps me tied to a desk. Whenever I can break free, it is usually for collecting. I don't do it for profit, I guess some people do. I think that would take much of the fun out it. Sometimes I will trade or give specimens away. I think giving away to people who have an interest in minerals is important as it may foster a greater interest to get out and collect their own and be more involved with a great hobby. That benefits all of us and strengthens the over-all hobby as more people become involved.

Where indeed! One should rather ask. "Where can't they be found!" Seriously, most abandoned mining areas have their fluorescent treasures. I would just take a good light, like a SW Superbrite and go to any mine and you'll be surprised. Ophir Hill is full of mines with great fluorescing scheelite, fluorite, calcite, and maybe hydrozincite and others. But Utah has mines all over the state with there and other minerals. The dugway geodes have dissolved uranium salts in the chalcedony/quartz matrix, the Thomas Range has bright green hyalite, San Juan Co and the Colorado Plateau mines have bright uranium-based flurescent minerals such as andersonite and zippeite. etc etc etc
