New Ute in SLC

Hello - I came to find this forum checking around the web for old mine sites. I really just like finding the old sites and the history surrounding them and have no interest in exploring the depths. Originally from TN I just like the feeling of finding the old west mining towns. It's like seeing a Zane Grey novel in person when you finally see the Bar X mine in Death Canyon. So far I have visited the area around Bar X, Four Metals, Rainbow Mine, Yellow Chief and surrounding area of Spor Mountain. The Town of Ophir and Eureka are no brainers but I don't feel the charge there like I do when I see these areas way out in the west desert. There is an unnamed mine in the Honeycombs area that surprised me last week. As the summer heat intensifies I plan on hiking to cooler sites in the Wasatch like Prince of Wales. As fall approaches I would like to get and rock hound some of these areas as well. I am surprised how many mine sites are unmarked on topo maps. It seems a shame so much history is missing about many of these sites and the men that that left their mark. I will say the highlight of my desert trips so far was the trip to the Four Metals mine. The roads in that Dugway range offer some greats scenery and there are quite a few relics remaining. The added creep factor of Dugway lurking in the distance from high vistas adds to the trip. Binoculars are a good addition on that trip. Thanks for letting me join up and lurk for new day off destinations.

Sounds like you have gotten around and have seen some good mines. I'm also a big fan of the Dugway range, its a great place to head out and get away from the crowds that a lot of other places draw.

My brother and I rode atvs to the 4-Metals Mine in the Dugways about a month ago. Took a bunch of pics. The wooden headframe is very cool. Wanns see Death Canyon next.
