    Exit Number 3

I drove out to the OH today and met Miah there to do some exploring. When I pulled in to the driveway I noticed it had been plowed and sure enough there was one of MU's finest on his 4 wheeler plowing the driveway free of snow. I pulled in said hi asked how Mr. puss was then we geared up quickly and in we went. Our destination was the big stopes so we headed up past Crystals Incline to the dip incline then to the stope below the BC ( Big Casino) where we milled around for a while until we were satisfied with our exploration coverage of the area then we had decided to head to the (BR) Big Room That was beyond the BC

We had entered the BC and begun to explore the area a while before we headed to the BR when I had gotten distracted by some rather large Pyrite cubes so Miah headed up the ladder to the big stope above the BC. He was gone for a while when he came back he said he had seen some leaves in the incline below the stope so we had a snack and rested for awhile then we climbed back up into the stope. Miah is a sure footed soul and I am not so after Miah talked me out of the fetal position and pulled my thumb from my mouth, told me some stories, fed me milk and cookies and tightened my training wheels I was able to clumsily climb the hospitalization looking ascent up a rock face so we could get to the top and see that there was the equivalent of a highway 10 feet away that we could have easily taken. We then proceeded to a small shaft that went to an incline 10 Feet below where Miah gracefully climbed down and I did a semi controlled fall to the incline below.

We headed up the incline and started seeing a huge amount of leaves we knew then that the incline had to go to the surface and sure enough we found ourselves looking at dusk through the rocks that covered the entrance. Miah worked the rocks out of the way and slid out into the canyon above Ophir. I handed him our gear and slid out after, the snow was falling and there was 10 to 12 inches on the ground. We worked our way down the canyon me telling Miah i'm cold asking are we there yet and trying to get him to give me a piggy back ride to no avail, before we knew it we were in the parking lot of the OH and loading up to head to the Miners Cafe for dinner. We had a ton of fun exploring and thanks Miah for finding exit number 3.

Any time spent with anyone in the Underground is a good bonding experience however more than anything I learned I need to become more fit to be able to keep up with Miah.

I was down in that same incline and totally missed the leaves. I'm glad I usually have the oracle along to spot out the obvious for me.
Sounds like a very fascinating day of exploration and it also answers some questions I had about the mine. One of our members, Mr. Irksome, told me the tale of another Ophir Hill entrance and how he used it to get to the blue room before the DOGM closure project. I vaguely remember seeing some of the landmarks that he mentioned and the whole puzzle finally clicked when Jeff and Miah made this discovery. This actually makes 4 total entrances to the Ophir Hill, one of which being the Montana Shaft which cannot be used without 100' of rope and some mad rappelling/welding/rigging skills.

            Good work Miah and Jeff!

I didn't realize that I was so skilled, thank you Jeff! It was a pretty fun find, and despite looking at some maps and overlays I am still unable to resolve just exactly where we popped-out. Anybody want to sign a petition for 1' resolution from Google Earth images??? It seemed like we exited then wandered just a few yards before Jeff identified a tram tower, then from there it was down the road in knee deep snow to the quarry and on thru town to the parking lot. And I respectfully disagree with the quoted snow depth - I am throwing 16" out there!

Hopefully I can identify the exit on the map, it's driving me crazy...
