    Owens Valley - May 2009

We just returned from a long weekend trip to the Owens Valley. We explored the Reward Mine which is just north of Lone Pine. It's quite a mine. The bottom level is accessed via a portal on the north side of the mountain. The tunnels are so large my Suburban fit inside with room to spare. We drove back 3/10ths of a mile into the mine, descending almost two hundred feet! We then climbed a vertical ladderway to access the upper levels. The mine has eight connected levels and a number of unconnected adits higher up the mountain. There are surface openings on levels five (420 feet above level one) and eight (570 feet above level one). There are some huge stopes in the upper levels and great mineralization throughout the mine. The surface workings are also impressive with a massive ore bin and transfer complex plus additional ore bins, tram stations and tram towers all up and down the mountain.

We also drove the area and looked at Cerro Gordo and the Saline to Owens Valley Salt Tram system. We stopped in Darwin and took a quick look around this huge mine complex. There is site improvement work going on right now (the owners are looking for investors... good luck!) so it's very hard to access. We stuck our head in numerous small mines and prospects along the way as well.

All the pictures are on our site along with a map of the Darwin Mine complex.

Wow, that thing sounds HUGE! How many hours did it take to shoot it all out?

I thought it would be much less extensive based on what I'd read on-line. I've found a few pictures of the top level but they're right by the adit so I don't think they went any further. I find a lot of sites with a picture of a shaft and a comment like "it kept going but we had to turn back". We only turn back if it's not safe!

Twelve hours is a good solid day of mine exploring! I did twelve hours in the Hidden Treasure a couple of weeks ago. I love the pictures of your Suburban driving through the mine.
