    Utah Queen in Jacob City

Did a day trip to the Utah Queen up in Jacob City last weekend. It would of been nice to get into the Hidden Treasure also-but it's posted. Here are a few pics

Thats a really drippy place in a number of spots I'd estimate there to be at least a mile of tunels in this mine. At least four incline shafts going both up and down. One shaft going straight up more or less.

Great photos! That is a neat mine. I believe this mine is Private Property, not owned by the Aults. We've been trying for a while to figure out the ownership on it so we can secure permission to the area. I believe the same person also owns the Wandering Jew mine.

            From:
One of the top ten Professional papers on Utah's mining districts. This covers Ophir, Jacob City, Stockton, Bauer, and was written by James Gilluly in 1932 [U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 173. Washington, D.C: Government Printing Office, 1932]

The Utah Queen mine is on the north wall of Dry Canyon on the first spur west of the Mono mine. It was located and worked vigorously in the early days [1870-1880s], and a large amount of ore was extracted, but the value of the output is unknown. In the 20-year period preceding this survey [1905-1925] the mine was worked in only a desultory fashion, with the extraction of about 200 tons of ore, probably not exceeding $6,000 in value. The ore averaged about 11 per cent of lead, 2 per cent of copper, and 20 ounces of silver and 60 cents in gold to the ton.

The mine is in the Humbug formation, near the upper contact. [the black rock in the posted picture is shale, not coal] The workings were caved and inaccessible at the time [1925] of this survey [Gilluly, USGS PP 173, 1932], and the mode of occurrence of the ore can not be stated. Presumably the mine resembled the Kearsarge, which is located in similar beds. Huntley reports about 900 feet of total workings in the mine in 1880, with a "large amount" of ore extracted.

The Huntley report, which contains an excellent report on the Hidden Treasure, can be found here:

A unique detailed report on mining in Utah along with explanation on how the census takers gathered statistics on mining. Includes the actual forms used by the census to collect information on mines and mining districts.
