    Syndicate Mine - Santaquin

Some photos I took of the mine a few years ago & recently scanned.

    The entrance.

    Mine interior.

Check out the wood beneath the tracks. Half 4x4's and the rest are small logs.

A drift off of the main tunnel which we did not explore since there is water & we didn't have waterproof boots.

    The end of the road.

They also blasted into a natural cavern in this mine.

For this shot I climbed up near the top of the cavern & took a picture looking down to the bottom where my brother-in-law is standing. The mine enters the cavern underneath the rock on the left with all the graffiti on it.

Looks like there is still some exploring left to be done inside there. Great pictures John, thanks for posting them. Interesting mixture of older and fairly new artifacts in this mine, it would be interesting to find out when this was last worked.

appears to have last been worked in the 1950s or 1960s

      From:

Utah mineral occurrences at SYNDICATE ADIT. The query selected 1 records.

      Reference number: 9427
      Deposit: 49-PAYSON LAKES-011
      County: UTAH
      Map Scale: 24000
      UTM northing: 4424950
      UTM easting: 436820
      UTM Zone: 12
      Township: 010S
      Range: 002E
      Section: 05
      Site Name: SYNDICATE ADIT
      Commodity: Lead
      Production: NO
      Status: INACTIVE PROSPECT
      Deposit Type: LODE; REPLACEMENT
      Description:
Workings: ONE ADIT WITH 5000 FT OF WORKINGS
      Formation Age: CAMB ²CAMB
Formation Name: TEUTONIC LS. ²OPHIR SHALE
Reference 1: DEMARS; L.C.; 1956; GEOLOGY OF THE NORTHERN PART OF DRY MOUNTAIN; SOUTHERN WASATCH MTNS.; UTAH: BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY RESEARCH STUDIES; VOL. 3; NO. 2.
Reference 2: BULLOCK; K.C.; 1962; ECONOMIC GEOLOGY OF NORTH-CENTRAL UTAH: BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY GEOL. STUDIES; VO. 9; PT. 1.

I personally doubt the description of "prospect"-- an adit with 5K feet of workings is a MINE...

From the Salt Lake Mining Review of 15 Jun 1922: (apologies for misspellings, pdf to ocr is quirky)
      SYNDICATE MINING HOPES BUOYED
after years of toil and constant assessing
of shareholders to keep the work moving the syndicate
mining company operating in the sSaanntaquin mining district
has made a surface disclosure on its property that
is most reassuring to those who have been backing the
proposition through its years of trial in a small gulch
near the highest point on the property manager ben H
bullock and others who were making a surface examination
of the ground decided to dig a hole in the surface
wash of the depression in a few feet they uncovered
iron encrusted material which when broken open adiissclosed
the presence of fine lead silver ore A small amount
of work determined the fact that a ledge oouuttccrrooppppeedd there
aanaidd that it was all of eight feet wide more than that it
seemed most likely that they had found the real apex of
the vein for which the tunnel started far ddoowwinn the mountain
      T
side several years ago was headed this tunnel has
been driven by hand under most trying conditions for about
2500 feet until now it is stated the objective point a
thousand feet below the outcrop uncovered less than a
month aaggoo is only to feet ahead
in driving this tunnel it is said that every physical
condition encountered has checked to a nicety with conditions
disclosed on the surface that some of the miners employed
in the tunnel have been willing to continue work and
receive pay in stock of the company coupled with enough
cash to keep the wolf from the door from the ssttaarret it has
been a case of poor men tackling a big financial undertaking
with little bnutt supreme faith in the ultimate oouuttccoomnlee
to spur them on the tunnel has bbeeeerni driven through faults
and fissures and occasional ssttrriinnog6leerrss and pockets of ore
but the main vein the ledge in wwhaiicchh it has always been
the hope and expectation of making a mine was still
ahead and it was bdeterimdiinneedd to keep on going now they
      are going after it right
on the first of the month an order for a compressor
and power drill equipment was placed with a prominent
machinery concern and with that plant installed no time
is to be lost in driving ahead the remaining distance to the
vein if ore is not then encountered a rraaiissee will be started
and kept ggoing until the ore opened last month on the
surface is encountered in the vein from the tunnel level
should the nneewwffoouunndd ore provvee continuous down to the
tunnel level the syndicate mine will be a bonanza and
ben H bullock who has skimped along for years on one
two and three mill assessments so as to make it as easy
as possible on stockholders will experience the great satis
faction of having those who have counted him as crazy
doffing their hats to him the syndicate backers deserve
all the success that may come to them

Hey does any one know if this mine is still open? And the coordinates? I was out in Santaquin a few weeks ago and found two mines, one was collapsed about 50 feet in and the other was completely caved in. However, this "syndicate mine" looks great I just don't want to make the trip again for nothing. Email or pm me please.

Ditto. Since it's not to far from Eureka, I'd like to check this one out too next time I'm down that way.

I've not been up there since the fire & the mud slides but if you were out this way and had an extra atv or could give me a ride, I could take ya right to it. Also it is high up, so waiting until things dry and warm up would be a good thing.

There are also a couple of interesting little holes I'd like to drop (Hint Hint to someone like Stu).

Great news! I always worry that some of the mines we once explored are now closed off. It's becoming more and more frequent down here. Congratulations on a good explore!
