    Amazon Mine

Last week Crystal and I took a little trip up to Bear lake with family. It went pretty well, but after a while we were itching to go explore a mine so we pulled out the MASMILS database and searched for mines nearby. We were able to sneak away one afternoon and head up to the Amazon Mine in Logan Canyon.

After a little bit of a hike we were able to locate the remains of a miners cabin. Rough weather and heavy snowfall have managed to collapse the cabin, but much of the original artifacts remain in the surrounding brush. Not far from the cabin on the wooded hillside we spotted the mine dumps. Three small dumps, a short adit, and a little shaft are all that remain of the actual mining operation. I believe it was a small one-two man outfit judging from the size and primitive nature of the main shaft. Not much exploring to be found inside the adit, just a few crystal formations and mossy rocks. After we finished inspecting the mine site we followed some old tree markings on a wild goose chase before finding our way back to the old mine road. Just off the road in a wash we discovered a prospect that a clever individual turned into a very sturdy shelter. Apparently the adit didn't pan out and was abandoned, at some point afterward it was walled off with native rock and mortar then outfitted with a wood door and a small steel stove. The floor is covered in concrete and it was very pleasant in there after hiking around in the summer heat outside. Thanks to the database, I found a place that very few people ever get to visit.

Quick Question. The Amazon Mine that you have listed is different than the one I have listed. The mine that you visited, is this the same one that shows up on a topo map of the area? I remember visiting this site, and didn't really see much. We were heading to another mine in the area and didn't have time to really look at the site. The other mine we saw was just before you get to the UDOT station just after the ski resort. If you park on the side of the road and walk down the hill you will see the mine entrance. We went back and explored about 1000 feet of passage (this is a +/- estimation). We were actually in this mine to survey the two caves that are in there. One is a vertical pit about 100 feet. The locals call it dog pit or dog cave.

Does this sound familar to anyone? I will post some photos when I unpack my hard drives (hopefully this next week).

      Thanks

Very cool Stuart. I've done a bit of 4wd'ing in that area but zero mine exploration. Looks like some neat stuff to check out. One more thing to add to my "to do list"

You are actually the second explorer to tell me about this. The Amazon mine(s) I visited was one that I found from MINDAT coordinates, unfortunately I didn't actually find the "big" Amazon adit. What I did find were quite a few small prospect shafts and a little shelter. I will be heading up there next summer to check out the adit that you visited and also a few other mines in the area. It sounds like I might want to drop into a couple caves also.

The other explorer who I have been talking to about the Amazon Mine is Dale Ascroft, he is very familiar with the Logan Canyon area and also happens to be an incredible photographer.
