Seeking historic info on AFC - Mines, rec, etc.

    Hey guys

I've been a MU member for a couple of years now and have had the opportunity to meet many of you at different events. I seeking your help with a different project, any information you might have on American Fork Canyon, basically any old pictures or stories from the 1800's to the 1980's.

I've mentioned this here on the forum before but I am slowly working on a book about the history of the canyon, specifically the mining history in the North Fork (above Tibble Fork) area. Anything you might be able to dig up would be helpful. A few of you have had some stories to share, I'm sure there are far more. You can contact me here on T of U or via email kurt at cruiseroutfitters dot com. Thanks for your help!

ExpUT This canyon seems to be left out of most history books. Maybe you might find more things by doing a lot of searching the area good. Also was there rail road to there? I have found a lot of stuff in the history on mining in Utah from the RR.

Hundreds of days in the canyon and some more planned for this coming season. I do have a fair amount of info on the rail road, but that was a very short run and was pulled up long before the mining was finished in the canyon. I'm after the oral stories, photos, etc that wouldn't come from the traditional methods i.e. library's, archives, etc.

          Kurt:

Page 10 of this book cites a SL Telegram newspaper article of Aug 12, 1931 about a high grade discovery in Tank Canyon by a R. Duncan Gardner.

Thanks Russ, that is one I don't think I had in my archive. I need to catalog my archive of references and sources at some point.

Russ I have read that info on Tank canyon before, it is very interesting!

Good luck with the research Kurt! You know I'll be slinging your book when you get it done.

Lots on generic internet searches (google), etc. I'll be using mine for the project and still need to hammer out permission with the USHS, etc. Even though I have paid for the digital scans of old photos and maps, I still have to pay once and if I use them for print. As for more modern stuff, lots of my trip reports on ExpeditionUtah and RME4x4.com. Some pics on my personal site here: http://www.cruiseroutfitters.com/2009_reports.html

Does anybody know of any explorable and open mines in American Fork Canyon? I was us Mary Ellen gulch yesterday, and found some interesting stuff, but want to know if there are any mines that are open and go deep enough to be explored? Thanks
