I myself have not made it into Washington County for exploration. Closest I've been is the Beaver / Milford area. There are a couple of ghost towns in the area, along with Bloomington cave. Visit the wiki to find their locations.

Brian, welcome to the forum!

I'm just down the road a ways in Las Vegas. I'm trying to develop a group of friends down here who are interested in mine exploration. It can be challenging.

Even if you don't have anyone to go with right now, there's no reason you can't go out and start "scouting" some of the old mine sites to see whether they warrant a exploration trip at a later time. Some of the old mines will be closed up, some will be vertical shafts, but some will be horizontal drifts with accessible adits. You don't want to get all your equipment together, round up friends, drive for an hour or more to get to a mine site you found on a map only to find that you can't access it! (or even worse, not be able to find the mine at all).

Google Earth with the mine database "overlay" is a great resource to help you identify promising mines. (The database is available for download on this site.) Often there are a number of mines close together so you can hit more than one on a single outing. I always take my camera, GPS, binoculars and a notepad. Here's a link to one of my "scouting" trips where I documented a number of mines that I plan on exploring. Now I can go back with friends without the risk of wasting everyone's time.

If you do scout a location, I will encourage you to post about it on this forum. Whether the mine is a great prospect or a complete wash-out, the body of information about each mine site continues to grow.
