    Map

This is a basic map of the town of Ophir. If you follow the main road up the canyon to the end you will find one of our favorite camp sites.

And I took the photo's of the proposal!!! Yeah! Ophir is one of my favorite places for other reasons. Stu and I first went to Ophir about 4 years ago after he did some extensive research of the town. One of the main mines is known as the Ophir Hill mine. We spend many years trying to get deep into it, but each time we were thwarted by either the gate or others in there with the key to the gate. About 9 months ago, we were able for the first time to get our first good look into the mine. What we saw was amazing.

Over the several ventures deep into the belly of the Oquir mountain through the mouth of Ophir, we have never found an end. Over an accumulated several days underneath, some amazing things were found.

One of my favorite geological sights underneath is the vivid blue flowing rivers of liquified copper.

Mining in Ophir Hill was conducted by following faults and natural caves. Many of these caves had larger amounts of mineral deposits such as calcite and FeO2 Ore.

Much of the lower levels of the mine is flooded with water during certain seasons. A gigantic underground resevoir sits hidden somewhere within the mines. It is the size of several football fields, up to six hundred feet deep, and emptys and fills every year. We have yet to find this lake. We guess that it is down a certain diagnal shaft we slid down. About 500 feet down this shaft, the tunnel filled with water, which was in the process of receding. The tunnel has a rail grade going up and down. It is our plan to continue venturing into this shaft later in the year when there is less water.

Ophir seems to have an unlimited amount of exploring in it. Every twist and turn is a new adventure. Just be careful, because it is one of the few mines that are possible to get lost in...

It breaks my heart that all the mines are now gated. I want nothing more than to get back into Ophir Hill Mine.
