    Olmstead Facility

A place I've been wanting to go for a while, just before you get into Provo canyon. The water thingamagig up there is abandoned(or so I've been told) Might be good for a little day trip. The building still has water running though it so we should avoid going down any drains or water ways.

Been here a few times. Its part of the Olmstead Power Plant, now owned by UP&L. Its an interesting complex up there. The best way to gain access is to take the trail head near the N. Orem Cemetery and hike over to the top, and drop down in from above.

There is a ton of water flowing through it, and you can peek inside the building. It makes for some fun speleology.

I renamed the topic and put the coordinates into your message.

Yeah it is abandoned, well sort of. Its still in use, but all the doors are open and no one seems to make any effort to keep anyone out. If you start at dry canyon and hike around in the foothills you will eventually end up there. I'm up for hiking up there, maybe Thursday or Friday evening and giving you a tour.

I think that could be arranged. Send me a private message sometime here within the next couple days and we can work out the details.

Anyone else want to tag along? Let me know.

Thanks for changing the name, I didn't know it's name.

I'd be delighted to go... if I weren't in Oregon for the week. Have fun yall! Take some pictures for me.

Also, you might not want to start at dry canyon, that will place you about a mile further from the building than you want to be. The hike is hot and dry, and there are a lot of steep cliffs toward the end.

Follow this map and you should be able to hike there in about twenty minutes.

We likely won't go back up right now, as we've been there many times. If anybody is interested in going though, we'd be happy to make a trip.

During certain times of the year, the road is open to public access and one can drive to within a few minutes hike. If the gate is open, your good to drive in.

I was just up there yesterday. Looks like they got signs all over about it being US Government property, but I went in anyways. The building is locked up pretty tight. One could get in if they truly desired, but overall, its a boring facility. Good to see once.

I'm getting far too old for these types of hikes.
