	The mine was started in the 1860's as part of the Tooele Mining District, and was later abandoned in 1928 when the mine dried up. It was used again privately in the 1960's. Bauer served to process ore from the surrounding Stockton mines.

He was reported to have used a tow strap to attempt to reach a cross timber when, just after reaching it, he stopped to adjust his strap when the timber gave way. He fell some 400' to 600' to his death. Search and Rescue worked for seven days to attempt to reach him, but officially discontinued the effort due to instability within the mine. His uncle, a firefighter, finally recovered his body from a pile of debris after the official recovery effort had been called-off.
