I'm a project engineer, working primarily with small hydroelectric plants.
I've always loved old west history, and ever since our family visited Calico Ghost town when I was like 10, I've especially enjoyed mining history (and steam engines/locomotives!).
When I was going to Oregon State, my college buddy introduced me to exploring the mines of the small Quartzville mining district. After that we'd often go four-wheelin in search of Caves in the Central Oregon desert, and small mines in SE Oregon. Then I joined the Willamette Valley Grotto - a local club of the National Speleological Society. There I was introduced to SRT work in caves. My brother and I began to acquire our gear and experience to safely explore vertical caves. One of the best trips was a nine hour trip to explore much of the vertical lava tube (formed on a fault), "Dynamited Cave".
Later, I got the chance to spend 5 hours underground at the working pocket gold mine "Original Sixteen to One", located near Nevada City, CA - a true trip of a lifetime.
All along, I've always believed there was no better way to complete a day of exploring mines or caves than finding a soakable hot springs!
There is still a lot of history in the hills, you just have to know where to look!

My name is Colton Gardner and I'm a full-time student at the University of Utah. I'm fairly new to abandoned mine exploration, but I've loved every minute of it so far! My brother, Tobin Gardner, and I got very interested in abandoned mines after we stumbled into the Lucky Strike Mine in Utah. You should already know me somewhat:) I've been on the MU Forums for about three months now. I've done research on ghost towns across Utah and would like to expand on a few (notably Sego). I work closely with the Utah State Railroad Museum and the Golden Spike Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society in restoration of railroad cars and steam locomotives. My main interest is in railroads and the towns they served, but I have always been intrigued by mining practices, and in most cases the mines and the railroads were dependent on each other for existence.

I am an avid ghostowner and make it a point to see at least two a year, usually more. Getting the ISUZU Rodeo stuck at second Ranch in Thompson Canyon was fun, and Grafton in December in the middle of a flood and snowstorm was quite interesting.

The Copper Globe Mine first opened just prior to 1900. U.S. Commissioner Edward Pike along with two associates worked the mine. In 1902, Pike paid $3000 to construct a 40-mile road to the mine site. The mines operation through WWI and WWII was very sporadic. The mine spent much of its time tied up in court over the ownership of the mines.

The Copper Globe Mine site has two horizontal adits, a short 10' incline adit, and an 1100' deep hand dug shaft. The southernmost adit extends approximately 50' where it ends by filling with sand. The incline has a unique hand hoist used to hoist small ore buckets out of the tunnel. Most of the tunnels interconnected within the globe before they filled with sand.

It all started on a far away trip with just Stu, Crystal, and I. Stu got the name Mojave after standing in the bed of my truck while doing 75mph down a dirt road in west desert. After a few random conversations, we started talking about a community. A few names were tossed around, and the Mojave Underground came up, based off my uncle's reanactment ground, Mojave Muleskinners. We thought the name of Underground to be appropriate due to our love for mines.

Eventually we began talking about a website to allow people to know of us and our ventures. On my 22nd birthday, late at night, I find myself bored and browsing the internet. It came to me that I should start a forum to post of our adventures, and alas... Mojave Underground was born!

Today, at the writing of this article, we have 45 users about 650 posts. We expect to continue expanding as much as possible.

As of July 24th, 2009, we have 387 users and 4130 posts between our Forums and Meetup group.

The War Eagle Mine is located 7.5 miles east of Tecopa, California at the south end of the Nopah Range. Despite the extensive mine workings and obviously large tonnage of ore removed from this mine and the adjacent Columbia and Noonday Mines astonishingly little has been published.
Although little information is available on the mine workings, it is known they extend about 175 meters below the existing crosscut. Access is via a series of raises and an inclined shaft. The main ore zone has been developed for several thousand feet along strike.

The mine workings are entirely within Noonday Dolomite. Mineralization appears to lie along a nearly north-trending vein which dips moderately to the east. A brief examination of the adjacent mines suggests the main ore vein is offset by a post mineral fault system which strikes N 65 W. A series of northeast trending fractures with steep northwest dips are thought to control localization of the ore bodies (Newman and Stewart, 1951). Minerals include Anglesite, Aurichalcite, Cerussite, Chalcopyrite, Fraipontite, Galena, Argentiferous Galena, Gold, and Pyrite.

Ore mineralization is restricted to argentiferous galena, but traces of chalcopyrite and pyrite were noted in stopes. Native gold has been reported (Newman and Stewart, 1951). Reportedly, the upper extension of the ore shoot has been oxidized to cerrusite and anglesite.
